According to Bloomberg, 8 out of 10 entrepreneurs who start businesses fail within the first 18 months. A whopping 80% crash and burn. Why so many? It seems that most people underestimate what it takes to run a business. In general, they say their biggest challenges are:

  • Attracting new clients (72%)
  • Retaining clients (55%)
  • Differentiating themselves from the competition (46%)
  • Remaining financially solvent (32%)
  • Expanding the business (22%)


If you look at the 5 top issues they have issues 3 are sales (attracting clients, retaining clients and expanding the business), 1 is marketing (differentiating themselves) and 1 is heavily influenced by sales levels (financially solvent). It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in. It is hard to be successful in any field without solid sales skills.

Selling is not about forcing, tricking or manipulating someone to buy your products or services. Sales is about solving problems. You’re not trying to convince a person to make a decision. You are providing information and a solution you believe can truly help them. You are providing them with the information they need to make a better decsion.

Gaining sales skills will help you attract new clients, retain clients, and teach you more about what your customer is needing to be successful. Spending time in building your sales skills is an investment that will pay dividends forever.
